San Dieguito Academy Math & Science Building

Mechanical and plumbing design of the new math and science facility at San Dieguito High School Academy. The two-story structure — which is centrally located on the Encinitas campus and replaced an early 1960s complex for art, theater, speech and related disciplines — houses 11 science classrooms, eight general purpose classrooms and two teacher workrooms. The new building has much more space and updated equipment. That includes additional sinks for science classes, chemical storage for the school’s chemistry labs and two large prep spaces that essentially run the length of the building on each floor.

Mechanical systems includes high efficiency package units (up to 17.5 SEER) with modulating powered exhaust, multi-stage compressor logic, variable speed laboratory exhaust fans, exhaust air valves, split-system heat pump units, interior lighting systems and controls, associated automatic controls, and environmentally sound refrigerant.

Plumbing systems include domestic cold and hot water piping systems, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, and natural domestic hot water heater.

Features include high efficiency cooling units. Energy savings were increased with the addition of an economizer cycle that included gear driven dampers to minimize failures of linkage based economizer controls. A campus wide energy management system was also introduced to monitor and reduce energy use and allow control from the district central network.
