Mechanical and plumbing design for Fire Station #5, located in San Diego’s Uptown district, that replaced an outdated existing facility located on a busy urban street. The approximately 10,500 SF station encompasses the following: two and one half apparatus bays with mechanical exhaust system, one battalion chief quarters, two fire captains quarters, six dorm rooms, kitchen, dining area, ready room, weight room, crew bathrooms, Battalion Chief bathroom, Captain bathrooms, communication room, watch office room, turn‐out locker room, storage areas, laundry/workshop area, clean shower area, workshop area, and three public parking spaces, to include one ADA compliant space and 18 crew parking spaces in a fenced secure area. The facility is two stories.
General traffic noise from the corner and street and the roar from Highway 163 is significant. Special care has been taken designing and detailing the sleeping rooms and gathering spaces to minimize sound intrusion. At the same time, proper design has allowed for sound protected outdoor patios adjacent to the kitchen and dining spaces open to the sun and sky.
