This Science building is four-stories and 106,509 SF, providing 6 classrooms, a 739 seat lecture hall, 13 lower and upper division labs, graduate research space, 125 faculty offices, Dean’s suite, 10 department suites, 7 conference rooms, laboratory spaces, vivarium, and administrative support spaces. The building houses the psychology, sociology, communication/mass media, economics, political science, anthropology, liberal studies and human development departments. It is the largest classroom/office building on campus.
The mechanical design includes the expansion of the underground mechanical utilities (chilled water, hot water, etc.) for connection to the existing campus utility distribution. The mechanical systems also include various custom-made air handling units with special acoustical considerations and low velocity ductwork. Special attention was paid to the air distribution configuration to ensure optimum comfort throughout the building. Laboratory spaces have temperature and humidity control and a redundant exhaust system.
Plumbing design includes low flow plumbing fixtures and includes the use of sensor operated flush valves and faucets. Domestic hot water is provided by a water source heat exchanger drawing from the campus hydronic hot water distribution system. A packaged central lab distribution system for purified water has been included for the rodent laboratory.
This project is LEED Silver Certified.
