San Diego Children’s Zoo

Mechanical and plumbing design services for the Children’s Zoo located within the San Diego Zoo. The new 2.3-acre attraction replaced the 61-year old mini-zoo. The project consists of four zones: Desert, Temperate Forest, Wetland Marsh, and Tropical Forest. Within these zones are various new attractions including a treehouse, supersized beehive, suspension bridges, and shallow streams where kids learn about the wildlife and engage in an outdoor adventure. During the day, zoo keepers take the animals out of their cages where kids can pet and feed them. Other new exhibitions include an enlarged hummingbird exhibit and a Komodo dragon exhibit.

Mechanical systems include high efficiency systems that provide mechanical cooling for a number of exhibits and keeper spaces. Extensive CFD modeling is used to determine the correct airflow intake locations for many of the naturally ventilated exhibits.

Plumbing systems include sanitary waste and vent systems connected to the site waste system. The animal holding areas and exhibits are provided with drains. Domestic water is provided to each holding area and exhibit, and connected to the site water system. Animal drinkers are provided to animal holding areas and exhibits. Exhibits are provided with misting systems to provide cooling and theming.
