Mechanical and plumbing design for the 21,200 SF new event center and physical education building for the Santana High School. The new state-of-the-art facility provides a space for campus events, performances, conferences, and physical education activities. The building features a unique Hall of Fame feature and also includes shower/locker rooms, an equipment room, and a trainer’s room.
Mechanical systems include rooftop VAV air handlers, a mixture of CAV and VAV boxes, new below grade chilled and heating hot water distribution, new VFD controlled HHW pumping system. Building exhaust systems were added as required to serve restrooms/locker rooms as well as to maintain building pressurization. Mechanical duct silencers and other acoustical treatments were incorporated to meet acoustical requirements. Careful consideration was given to the controls of each system working closely with the district to provide alarm and monitoring as requested.
Plumbing systems include domestic cold and hot water, sanitary waste and vent, and natural gas systems. The domestic water heaters are high efficiency condensing type and low flow plumbing fixtures are used throughout the building.
Sustainable Features include utilization of water-efficient fixtures and variable air volume design, and high efficiency cooling units. Energy savings were increased with the addition of an economizer cycle that included gear driven dampers to minimize failures of linkage based economizer controls. An energy management system was also introduced to monitor and reduce energy use and allow control from the central network. The design also incorporates extensive sustainability strategies that result in building performance that exceeds Title-24 energy requirements.
